We do more than clean your teeth!

When you see us for your hygiene appointment, you know that we will clean your teeth. But, did you know that dental hygienists do much more than that. As a critical part of your care, our hygienist, April, will make sure your dental treatment plan addresses your needs, based on your age and medical conditions, to help you achieve the best oral health possible.

She will begin by asking you about your medical history as often as your physician would ask. She conducts a thorough oral exam, looking for signs of tooth decay or wear, and gum inflammation. She will also perform a thorough oral cavity examination, including a tongue exam to look for oral cancer and other problems.

Finally, to prevent and treat disease, April will remove plaque and calculus, (tartar), both above and below the gum line. Along with polishing your teeth, she may apply fluoride or pit and fissure sealants to prevent cavities. If you are sensitive during your cleaning she may apply a desensitizing product to help with cold and air sensitivity.

Of course, Nitrous Oxide (happy gas) is available for your comfort if you feel it is necessary.

OUR HYGIENIST IS ALSO A TEACHER!

By examining and cleaning your teeth, April can tell, despite your best efforts, if you need to brush and floss more often or better.

April has been a hygienist for over 20 years, and has been with Dr. Withers for over 10 years. She will give you special instruction on the best way to brush and floss, teaching you the best procedure and times of day to perform each one. She can suggest products to help you work the floss between your teeth and fixed bridges.

Often the signs and symptoms of certain diseases such as heart disease and diabetes appear in the mouth first. She will go over instructions for your specific instance or history.

Whatever your questions and concerns, do not be afraid to ask April or one of her assistants. That is what we are here for!!
