Periodontal Disease

Oklahoma City Dentist

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Your gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may seem. There is a very shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum line in the sulcus, where they cause the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged, the sulcus develops into a pocket: generally, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket.

Periodontal diseases are classified according to the severity of the disease. The two major stages are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a milder and reversible form of periodontal disease that only affects the gums. Gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease called periodontitis.

Restorations

Dental Restorations Oklahoma CityOKC DentistA dental restoration or dental filling is a dental restorative material used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the aesthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material. Dental restoration also refers to the replacement of missing tooth structure which is supported by dental implants.

Dental restorations can be divided into two broad types: direct restorations and indirect restorations. All dental restorations can be further classified by their location and size. A root canal filling is a restorative technique used to fill the space where the dental pulp normally resides.

No Mercury! No Metals! No Kidding!

OKC DentistCosmetic Dentist OKCFor years, silver/mercury amalgam was the standard filling material used in dental practices, and many practices still use it. However, Dr. Withers has not used amalgam/silver filling material for the past 17 years. Dr Withers is pleased to offer you modern, state-of-the-art restorations that are natural-looking, tooth colored, contain no metals, and can actually strengthen your teeth.

Intra-Oral Camera Brings You Up Close & In-depth

The doctor works hand-in-hand with his patients to create a user friendly atmosphere. One of the ways we bring this about is through the use of a high-tech tool, the Intra-Oral Camera. This amazing device is a miniature video camera that displays a close-up picture of the inside of your mouth. Sometimes it is hard for a patient to see what the dentist is talking about with a conventional x-ray. With the intra-oral camera you can take a look for yourself why work needs to be done and which teeth are doing fine. You then become a participant in the decision making process. You'll love how this works!

Digital Imaging

Our environmentally friendly digital imaging system emits up to 90% less radiation than conventional x-rays. We take your yearly x-rays to check for decay and bone loss. We also have a “digital” panorex which will show you all the teeth, sinus area, and your joints. Extremely accurate digital images can be viewed instantly and stored on our computer system where they will always be available. No more waiting for images to develop and no more chemical waste to pollute the environment. If you are bringing conventional x-rays from another dental office we can upload these into your chart. We can also email x-rays any of your x-rays if needed to specialists, which gives them a clearer x-rays than copies that are printed.
